Recently, I received an email from a LinkedIn expert who promises to teach winning business strategies.
In the email, the author was considering replacing his receptionist with an AI tool. He suggested three questions readers should ask themselves before making a similar decision.
All three questions focused on AI productivity and efficiency. Not one addressed the human being he was considering replacing.
I find this increasingly concerning. As conversations about AI adoption become dominated by productivity, efficiency, and cost savings, the value we place on human beings and their well-being seems to be receiving less attention.
An AI receptionist can answer calls, schedule appointments, and provide information efficiently. But what about the friendly face that greets clients when they arrive? The person who recognizes returning visitors, notices when someone needs attention, and makes people feel welcome?
And perhaps there is a more important question for leaders to consider: Before investing in technology to replace an employee, have we invested enough in that employee to understand the value they could contribute?
AI adoption is not simply a question of technological capabilities and productivity. It is also a question of leadership, organizational values, and how we treat people whose work makes our businesses possible.
